Book Review

“The Lister A & B Story ”
 by David W Edgington

There cannot be many stationary engine enthusiasts who are not the proud owners of one or more of the nicely proportioned and well-engineered Lister A or B types in either tank-cooled or hopper cooled form.

David Edgington, founder-editor of Stationary Engine Magazine, and currently author of its popular monthly feature  ‘Engine Torque’, is the author of this latest book on the subject which is an upgrade of his much earlier but far less comprehensive work on the same models.

The book is the result of a “labour of love” involving many cloistered hours of research and study of contemporary illustrations, factory records and memories of former R A Lister employees. It details by Serial  number and Spec number the constant small changes made during the production run of around twenty  years including the history, origins and development, the magnetos, fuel tanks, cylinder heads and various special customer specifications like air filters, and sub-bases for specific applications.  The kerosene models are also deal with.

The production day books of the Lister works and sales ledgers, reveal some of the customer’s names and destinations around the world especially in the early days, which make fascinating reading; a few of the very first production engines still survive even to this day..

Printed in a matching A4 format to the “Lister D Story”  and “Lister CS diesel Story”, again this is a book which no self-respecting engine man should be without; so treat yourself, or if the engine-woman in your life is stuck to find you that elusive Christmas present, then this book could be the very thing and will be bedside reading and useful reference for years to come. It consists of fifty pages of quality paper packed full with hitherto unknown facts between its attractive glossy covers and is well illustrated with many photos of exceptional clarity from the camera of, amongst many others, our well known Stationary Engine Magazine photographer Philip Thornton-Evison.

Buy this book, read it well and you will find yourself walking around the next rallyfield examining the A-types on display and thinking “not all Listers are the same…..”!

“The Lister A & B type Story,” by David Edgington, is available from his address in page two of Stationary Engine Magazine, for £12-00 incl p&p (plus £4-00 extra overseas). It is unlikely go to a second reprint, and you will certainly regret not having it in your bookshelf.

“Rule of Thumb” The life story of an engineer.  By David Curwen.  The book covers David’s life from when watching the trains that ran near his home kindled a lifelong interest in engineering. From an apprenticeship at a local garage  in the 1930s, to maintaining generating plant, followed by steam cars and then miniature steam locomotive construction. He is also responsible for building the Curwen-Hartop replica small-power engine. This is engineering of a style we won't see again. The book is written in a humorous and easy to read manner and will appeal to all with a mechanical “bent”.

Price £12-50 plus £1-00 post and packaging UK (Overseas £4-00p).

“The Lister CS Story” is David Edgington’s latest offering to the stationary engine enthusiast, the CS being the most popularly collected diesel engine worldwide.  The longevity of this engine has had a major bearing on it’s popularity as retired engines and occasionally lighting sets in restorable and sometimes running condition can still be located with some ease.  Its reputation in third world countries has lead to the name ’Lister’ becoming synonymous with any twin flywheeled engine.  This has also lead to a large number of copies appearing, with at least 15 different CS look-alikes having been produced in India and Pakistan since the 1960’s.  Covering both the ‘High’ and ‘Low’ speed range of engines the book also contains a unique collection of drawings and photographs, many of which have come from the archives of Lister-Petter Ltd.

The book is intended purely for the enjoyment of the CS owner/enthusiast to learn more about this range of engines although it should appeal to most enginemen and make a welcome addition to the bookshelf.

Price £12-00p post paid in the UK (Overseas add £4-00p).

Wolseley 1909 to 1975

Most engine enthusiasts have or have had at some time one of the simple and steady-running little WD series engines made by the Wolseley Sheepshearing Company of Witton, Birmingham. Those more fortunate among us may even own one of the earlier models which are very sought after indeed. For such engine people and indeed any one interested in engineering history, this book chronicles the history of the famous British engineering company and its close association in its formative years with Herbert Austin. It is a much enlarged and updated 56 page edition of the earlier book from Lodge Wood Farm.  It describes in very great detail, the types, variations and changes of Wolseley stationary engines from 1909 to 1975 with many colour photographs and diagrams. A chapter is also devoted to the variations sold to overseas markets with different names. In the case of the WD models (except WD8 onwards) information has been drawn from factory records discovered in bad condition in a farm barn during 2009 when it was previously thought they had been destroyed. Well researched over many many months, ‘Wolseley 1900 to 1975’  is available from Vintage Reprint Services, Lodge Wood Farm, Hawkeridge, Westbury, Wilts BA13 4LA or  www.stationaryenginebooks.co.uk, very reasonably priced at £13-00 post paid UK.

"The Lister D Story" concerns the most popular engine seen on the rallyfield and represents the majority of enthusiast’s first steps into the hobby.  It is based on sales ledgers and day books from the Lister company and offers many interesting insights and previously little known facts about this fascinating product of the Dursley factory.  The early engine development, detail changes, specials, diesel version, rotary valve versions are all there and of course Spec and Serial Number details. There are a multitude of colour pictures illustrating the book, some by WSEC member and well-known stationary engine photographer Philip Thornton-Evison. It is well printed on quality paper and available from David for £11-50 including first class mail and blister packaging.

There is now a much updated reprint of David Edgington’s "Old Stationary Engines" in the Shire Books series. The first edition was published back in the 1970s and the new edition has undergone some considerable changes, twice the number of pages and plenty of new photographs and new material.  It has become a "must" for the bookshelves of the serious engine collector.
